Arval Rexrode, 96, of Waynesboro, passed away peacefully on Saturday April 17 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on Middle Mountain west of Blue Grass in Highland County, the only child of Eddie Benjamin Rexrode and Amy (Waybright) Rexrode.

Arval completed his elementary education in a one room schoolhouse on Middle Mountain and graduated from Blue Grass High School. After serving in the Army he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech). He was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro and retired from WayneTex with over 30 years of employment. Following retirement, he spent his days on golf courses, vegetable gardening, fishing, hunting, watching baseball, and was an avid reader.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in France during the last seven months of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0340.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Bernice Beckner Rexrode who is 101 years old. They were married on March 22, 1947 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Rockbridge Baths, VA. His children include Clifton A. Rexrode and wife Oma, David E. Rexrode and wife Sharon, W. Harvey Rexrode, who devoted much of his time in taking care of his mother and father, Francine R. Johnston, Iris R. Birckner and husband Eric, all of Waynesboro. Grandchildren, who all called him "pap pap" include Casey A. Leaman and husband Alex of Mebane, NC, David Rexrode and wife Kathryn of Stafford, VA., Amy Weber and husband Willis of Richmond, VA, Benjamin Rexrode and wife Emily of Waynesboro, Ellie Johnston of Ashville, NC., Kaitlyn Johnston of Denver, Colo., Brix Birckner and wife Laurel of Waynesboro and Brandon Birckner and wife Sarah of Waynesboro. Arval also treasured his 13 great grandchildren.

The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to special care provider Cathy Reid for her devoted help the last two years, to Hospice of the Shenandoah, with particular gratitude to Jennifer, Tanya, and Joey, and to Elaine of Augusta Home Medical.

A graveside service for immediate family members will be conducted by Reverend April Cranford and held at Augusta Memorial Gardens within the next week.
