We are saddened to announce the passing of Betty Booker Potts Cooley of Stone Mountain, Georgia.  She died at the age of 82 on January 7, 2023.

Betty was born on November 13, 1940, in Waynesboro, Virginia, where she met her soul mate, husband, and life-long bridge partner Ted Cooley.  Betty and Ted lived in Waynesboro, Lawton, Killeen, Richmond, Greensboro, Worchester, Omaha, Bluffton, and Stone Mountain and raised three children along the way.  They were married for 60 years.  In retirement, they traveled the world and visited over 110 countries working on cruise ships as the formal Bridge Directors and teachers.  She earned the distinction of Bronze Life Master and was an American Contract Bridge League Game Director and accredited teacher.

Betty graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in nursing and then served as a Registered Nurse in Waynesboro, Virginia, and Lawton, Oklahoma.  She was always very active in church, serving on many church committees as an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church.

She was active in the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), where she helped run NAMI support groups for over 13 years and was instrumental in fundraising projects.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and James Potts.

She is survived by her husband, Ted, and her children, Thad Cooley, Andy Cooley, and Robert Cooley; her grandchildren, Alex Cooley, Taylor Cooley, Pierce Cooley, and Carys Cooley; and her sister Ellen Potts Smith.
