Charles ("Charlie") H. Baker, Jr.  age 95, passed away peacefully at his home on July 13, 2025. He was born September 14, 1929 to the late Charles H. and Fannie Baker of Verona, Virginia. In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Mary Corbin Baker; and sisters, Charlotte Simmons, Elizabeth Sheets and Dorothy Hess.

Charlie cherished his time with family more than anything.

Charlie is survived by Kathryn Baker of Waynesboro, VA, Chip Baker (Debbie) of Clemmons, NC, Mike Baker (Kelli) of Waynesboro, VA, Karen Baker Coffey (Bruce) of Belmont, NC; grandchildren, Christin Baker of Winston Salem, NC, Alexander Coffey (Kendall) of Raleigh, NC, Jordan Coffey of Belmont, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition, Charlie is also survived by his special friend, Lena Robertson of Waynesboro, VA.

Charlie graduated from Wilson Memorial High School and enlisted in the US Army stationed in Fort Meade, MD and worked at Crompton Manufacturing for a short time until he joined Clifton Forge Waynesboro ("CFW") telephone company where he worked for 35+ years, retiring in 1992.

Charlie was committed to his faith and community which were central to his life. He served as a member of the Session and as Clerk for several years at Second Presbyterian Church and also served Meals On Wheels. He was a devoted youth advisor and high school Sunday School teacher, impacting many young lives through his example and leadership.

He was a 30+ year member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where he was an elder and usher of the church. He also served as a pivotal organizer of the Summerlee annual mission trip to West Virginia where he drove a motorhome to the location to support the volunteers.

Charlie was also a member of the Waynesboro Volunteer Fire Department until 1962 when he became a Charter Member of the Dooms Volunteer Fire Department.

Charlie had a deep love of sports and was a familiar presence on the field as a coach for Babe Ruth Baseball. Whether he was cheering from the stands or giving guidance from the sidelines, he found joy in the spirit of the game and the teamwork it inspired.

Visitation will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025, at McDow Funeral Home, 1701 W. Main Street, Waynesboro, VA. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm.  Internment will follow at  August Memorial Park , 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro VA.  He will be laid to rest next to the love of his life, Mary C. Baker.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in his name, to the charity of your choice reflecting Charlie's generous heart and lifelong care of others.
