Conley Elgene Johnson passed from this life to his heavenly home on October 24, 2025 at his home at the age of 79.
He was born on July 31, 1946 to the late Daniel Eugene and to the late Mary Alice Hall Johnson in Seven Mile Ford, Virginia, also preceding him is his wife of 54 years, Martha Proctor McLeod Johnson who passed away in 2022.
He graduated from Emory and Henry College where he met the love of his life, Marty.
He always enjoyed spending time with his family and delighted in supporting his grandchildren in their varied interests. He never forgot his roots and the family and friends he grew up with. He was a devoted deacon who poured his heart, hands, and care into the church building and body of believers. He could be found at the building quietly serving all hours of the day.
After retirement, Elgene developed a passion for genealogy which led him and Marty on many adventures along with spending countless hours researching his family's history, along with that of his beloved wife. Elgene retired from DuPont after 33 years of service where he developed personal relationships that continue to this day.
He is survived by his daughter Jennifer McLeod Johnson Wells and her husband Scott and his son Matthew Elgene Johnson and his wife Kelli. He is also survived by granddaughters Karisa Wells and Victoria Johnson, grandsons Konner Johnson, wife Sarah, and Harrison Wells, brother Mack Johnson and sister-in-law Alice Johnson.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
A Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro on Sunday, November 2, 2025.
Burial will be at Middle Fork Cemetery in Smyth County, Virginia on Monday, November 3 at 2pm. (203 Middle Fork Rd, Marion, Virginia.)
Flowers are welcome. Donations in his memory may be made to the Mission's Fund at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, 1301 Red Top Orchard Road, Waynesboro, Virginia, 22980, or to the charity of your choice.
