Darrell Lee Wallace

Darrell Lee Wallace was born on March 14,1942 in Oak Hill, WV during a snow storm. His father Ernest shoveled a walking path from their home to the main road. Due to the depth of the snow and inability to get a car over the road, it seemed unlikely that they would make it to the hospital. However, his mother was a RN and wanted the birth to take place at a local hospital, so it did.

Darrell grew up in Oak Hill and spent many hours hunting and fishing with his brother Charlie. He graduated from Oak Hill High School and attended LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas for engineering. He settled in Waynesboro, Virginia, and worked for GE, as well as Klann Inc. Darrell married Blenda Workman and together they built a home in Afton, Virginia . He fathered two boys, Dru and Shane. His love for the outdoors never left him and both boys were encouraged to wander in the woods and streams near the home. Darrell opened a machine shop on his property and always claimed he had made parts that landed the USA on the moon. After he retired, he continued to coon hunt ,do some bear hunting and took his walkabouts in the woods. Often, he loved to tell stories about his life in West Virginia and the hunts he had been involved with. He admitted his hunting stories were sometimes expanded on in the telling. He also had a story ready for anyone who wanted to listen. Love of his sons and two granddaughters, Stormy and Lilly, filled his life. He also loved to garden and he blessed his friends with produce during the growing season. The flock of chickens that he raised also provided his friends with wonderful eggs. He attended Hebron Baptist Church for years, working on the cemetery committee, the Bethlehem project, and mowing grass and weed cutting for the church. He also could be found driving the church van to take the youth on various outings. Darrell never turned away a problem or repair job that needed doing. He was a master tool and die maker and taught his son Shane that trade. Until we meet again, his parents, Ernest and Ethel Wallace preceded him to heaven. Left behind is his wife of 54 years, Blenda; his son, Dru of Daytona Beach, Florida; his son, Shane of Afton, Virginia; his two granddaughters, Stormy Lee Sutherland-Wallace, and Lilly Sutherland-Wallace of Afton, Virginia; his brother, Dr. Charlie Wallace and wife, Leslie, of Staunton, Virginia; many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He also leaves his coon hunting and bear hunting friends whom he loved swapping stories with.

At his request there will be no viewing. A graveside service will be conducted by Brother Billy Coffey and a late lunch will be shared with family and friends at Hebron Church Social Hall on Monday, February 13 at 12:00 noon.
