Staunton
Emory Garland Harris, 95, a resident of Birch Ridge Senior Living in Staunton, VA, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was born November 9, 1929 in Covington, VA, a son of the late Emory Brown "E.B." Harris and Ida (Dressler) Harris.
While attending Virginia Tech, he joined the US Army and served his country faithfully during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he returned to VT to complete his bachelor's degree in engineering. He then courted and married the love of his life, Dorothy Woodell. After a brief stint at JCPenney in Frederick MD and later Roanoke VA, Mr. Harris decided sales and management were not for him. He and his young family then moved to Waynesboro where Mr. Harris began his career as a Quality Control Inspector at Reynolds Metals. He retired after 30+ years of dedicated service.
Mr. Harris traveled extensively during his lifetime to places such as Germany, Austria, France, Canada, and every state of the continental United States. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf with his friends, having a good meal, and was partial to Little Debbie snacks. In his retirement years, he enjoyed "taking it easy".
He was a devoted member of Wayne Hills United Methodist Church and later St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy (Woodell) Harris; son, Glenn Edward Harris; and sister, Josephine (Harris) Paulus.
Surviving are his son, Gary Harris and wife Shereen of Staunton, VA; daughter, Barbara (Harris) Allen and husband Jimmy of Waynesboro, VA; granddaughters: Coty (Allen) Lyle and husband Brad with their children Lux, Finley and Virginia; Rachel (Harris) Gallaugher and husband Ian; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Thursday, June 5, 2025 at McDow Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held Friday, June 6, 2025 at 1:00 pm in Riverview Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Kevin Haynes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Dementia Society of America, 188 N. Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. Donations may be phoned in at 1-800-336-3684 .
