Franklin Downey Wagner, 84, died peacefully on October 14, 2021.  He was born January 25, 1937, in Waynesboro, Virginia, to the late Ralph Monroe and Minnie Arnold Wagner.  He lived the majority of his life in his hometown of Waynesboro with the exception being the years immediately after his graduation from college that he spent in Fairfax County teaching at Falls Church High School and James Madison High School.  Upon his return to Augusta County, he taught Industrial Arts, Basic Electricity and Mechanical Drawing at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, VA. He eventually left the teaching profession and pursued his love of construction and residential building, which remained his profession until his retirement.

He is a graduate of Waynesboro High School and Virginia Tech.  He loved his Hokies and spent countless fall afternoons in Blacksburg watching football games and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of his Virginia Tech campus.  His other love was woodworking, which can be witnessed by the multitude of fine furniture from his hands that can be found in his home and throughout the area.  He is a member of First Baptist Waynesboro and especially loved the Wednesday night dinners where he shared in food and fellowship.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Jack Wagner, Clarence Newton Wagner and Ralph Arnold Wagner; sisters, Louise Shumate, Mary Taylor, Zora Sinclair, Ruby Hubbard and Dorothy Powell.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Janet Fitzgerald Wagner; sons Tony (Karen) and Mark; daughter Barbara (Scott) Cash; four grandchildren (Andrew, Brendan, Jake and Kristen); sister, Marie Duckhardt and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at First Baptist Church Waynesboro on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at 2:00 PM officiated by Rev. J. Barrett Owen.  A reception will follow the service.
