Hansford Junior Johnson, 87, formerly of Waynesboro, VA, passed away Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Journey's Crossing in Elkton, VA.

He was born October 5, 1936 in Middlebrook, VA, a son of the late Tazwell Veller Johnson and Bessie Elizabeth (Woods) Johnson.

He served his country faithfully with the U.S. Army Reserves.

In April of 1957, he started his career at Western State Hospital as an escort. He retired in 1991 and became an escort volunteer driving patients to many wonderful outings until 2018. Mr. Johnson also served as President of the Volunteer Services Council for Western State Hospital. He was a devout and caring worker.

He was a member of the Staunton Lions Club and participated with many others.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Furvina Eustler Johnson; and 15 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his loving wife of 21 years, Pearl Goode Johnson;  his step-children, Suzanne K. McCray, James T. Nauman, Sr., Donnie L. Nauman, and Penni Sue-Faith Nauman; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Carrie Ann Johnson of Staunton, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life for Hansford will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, November 9, 2023 at New Covenant Church in Greenville, VA, officiated by Pastor Theresa Moore.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly ask that memorial contributions be made in his name to Wayne Hills Baptist Church, or to New Covenant Church.
