Obituary

Harding W Lonas, born April 25, 1926 passed away last Saturday, February 29, 2020.  He lived a life full of honesty, integrity, respect and love.  He was loyal and devoted to his family, his work, his church, his community and his country.

He joined the marines at age 17 and served in the South Pacific for 21 months and then served again in the Korean conflict in 1950 and 51.  He was a founding family in the formation of Westminster Presbyterian Church.  He worked at GE for 31 years where he supervised relay building some of which were part of the Apollo mission to land the first man on the moon.  He was a past master in the Waynesboro Masonic Lee Lodge  209.

He spent his last years at Stuarts Draft Retirement Community where he received respect, care and understanding.  He appreciated seeing the Blue Ridge where he spent many days hiking and driving through the years.

He was predeceased by his wife Janet Viar Lonas, Mother and Father Walter and Ruby Lonas, his brothers Walter and Allan Lonas.

He is survived by his children Jim and Nancy Lonas, Catherine and Jim Metze and Susan and John Fersner, their children and grandchildren, and extended family. Jim and Nancy Lonas of Columbus Ohio, Catherine & Jim Metze of Charlotte, NC, Susan and John Fersner of Waynesboro, VA.  Grandchildren Allen and Sarah Lonas of Arkansas, Sarah Goforth of Milwaukee, Andrew Lonas and Callahan Hager  of London, England, Victoria Agop of Charlottesville, Jonathan Metze of Charlotte NC, Dylan Fersner of Waynesboro, Savannah Fersner and Emmett Crawford of Richmond.  Great grandchildren:  Emma and Kate Lonas, TJ and Tyler Goforth, Oliver and Elliott Agop, and James Metze.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and sister in law Marjorie Green and brother in law Albert Clark.

Visitation is Friday, March 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 at the McDow Funeral Home on Main Street Waynesboro, VA.  A Masonic Funeral service will be in the chapel at the McDow Funeral Home on Saturday March 7 at 11:30 a.m. Active pallbearers will be James Lonas, Allen Lonas, Andrew Lonas, Jonathan Metze, Dylan Fersner, Jeff Postans

Military Honors by American Legion post 340. A reception will follow at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
