Helen passed away peacefully into the arms of our Lord and Savior, on July 28, 2025.

Her proud family has been in Augusta County since the 1700's. Helen was born in Churchville, Virginia as the fifth child to Meredith (Jim) Coiner Ashby and Lois Evelyn Young Ashby, on November 6, 1939.

Her greatest joy was her family, who will cherish all the wonderful memories they have shared with her through the years, her sister and brother-in-law Evelyn and William Jack, her loving daughter and son-in-law Donna Patricia Johnson Balser and Tony, their children Anthony Balser, Bethany Balser and Nicholas Hall (Addie), great-grandchildren, Katie Balser, Joshua, Calab and Ryleigh Hall.

And her family on the West Coast is her loving son Timothy Scott Johnson, Sr. and daughter-in-law Julia, their children, Avie Clutters (Cliff), Kami Ott (Ryan), Elisa Hammond (David), Timmy Johnson, Jr. (Brittney), and Joel Johnson (Chelsea) great-grandchildren, Abigail, Cadence, and Ruth Clutters, Jackson, and Lincoln Ott, Alice, Noa, and baby boy Johnson due in December, also our large extended family of in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Helen has many loved ones to welcome her at Heaven's gates. Along with her parents are her brothers and sisters, Charles Ashby, Mary Alice Berry, Shirley Landrum, Barbara Landes, Jimmy Ashby, Jr., and Butch Ashby.

Helen graduated from Wilson Memorial High school, the class of '57. She read her Bible daily, loved playing BINGO, going to Vegas, Charlestown and traveling to the West Coast to visit her son and family. She made several friends while living in Hesperia, California, especially Debbie Shaum.

She was a very hard-working person all her life working several jobs at a time to support her children. Her first job was F.W. Woolworth's downtown Staunton, she also worked at Woolco, the Verona 7-11, AMP, Little Debbie, Penny Plate, and Newmans.

We are deeply grateful to her granddaughter Bethany Balser for her loving care making her grandmother's final days peaceful and comfortable, also her son-in-law Tony Balser during those final hours.

Special thanks to the Hospice of the Shenandoah, and the nurses at Augusta Health for their exceptional care and the love they showed our family.

The family will receive friends and family at McDow Funeral Home on Friday evening, August 1, 2025 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
