HORACE (TOBY) EUGENE GLASS
Horace (Toby) Eugene Glass of Afton, VA, passed away on August 18, 2026. He was born in Afton on August 23, 1954 to Randolph and Nora Glass, Sr., Toby was the youngest child of six. Velma, Toby’s oldest sister, nicknamed him after she decided she did not like the name Horace.
Toby worked for DuPont for twenty-eight years and then owned and operated Glass Excavating for ten years. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage. He was extremely talented at fabrication. He could take nothing and make something out of it. He was in the process of assembling a 1965 GTO in his garage. He enjoyed riding his Gold Wing motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway. At home, Toby was often assisted by Margaret Eddins. She was his special friend and work partner from Glass Excavating and she helped him with the upkeep of his place.
Toby was a faithful member of Mt. Ed Baptist Church in Batesville. He treasured the Wednesday night men’s class. During his battle with acute myloid leukemia, his testimony and his faith in God’s promise carried him and those around him through seven years of health struggles. In the last moments of his life, he looked forward to an existence without pain and suffering.
Toby is preceded in death by his parents, Randolph Glass, Sr. and Nora Glass; sisters, Velma Sites, and Bonnie Harmon; brothers, Randolph (Randy) Glass, Jr.; an infant brother, Carroll Glass; and his loving husky-shepherd mix, Cody.
Toby is survived by his sister, Janice Hutchinson; son, Scott Glass; grandchildren, Tanner and Kurstyn Glass; friend, Margaret Eddins; and special friend, partner, and love of his life, Nancy Bryant Chernault.
A special thanks goes out to the staff at the UVA Health Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and Hospice of the Piedmont.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Mt. Ed Baptist Church in Batesville, Shriner’s Hospital, and St. Jude’s.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
