James Alton Cook, Jr. 85, of Waynesboro,Virginia passed away peacefully at home on October 26, 2023.

He was born in Winnsboro SC and grew up in Augusta GA, graduating from Richmond Academy where he received the Sheridan Saber Award in his senior year. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering and was a member in the Chi Phi Fraternity. He played many sports and excelled in football while at GA Tech.  Upon graduation he served in the Army Signal Corp.

He married the love of his life in 1960 and moved to Waynesboro, Virginia with E.I Dupont de Nemours in 1961. He was president of Waynesboro Choral Society and a member of the Main Street Methodist Church. He enjoyed coaching Pop-Warner football for many years, influencing youths throughout the valley.  Jim enjoyed attending the Masters Golf Tournament, gardening, and travel.

He was preceded in death by his parents James Alton Cook, Sr and Helen Dicks Cook, sister-in-law Martha Sims Cook and great granddaughter Maeve Sandoval.

James Alton Cook, Jr. was married to his beloved Patricia Lynch Cook for 63 years.  He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, James Alton (Beau) Cook, III (and Heather), Michael George Cook (and Angela), & Edward Allen Cook (and Sheila).  4 Grandchildren Ashton Rhyne (and Justin), Maddison Sandoval (and Sandy), Greyson Cook (and Haley) & Ryan Cook. 2 Great Grandchildren Kingston and Kohen. 1 brother Edward William Cook and 1 sister Vivian Lovett (and William).  Including several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Friday November 3, 2023, at 11:00 am at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro, VA.
