Waynesboro

Obituary

Jean Austin Reynolds, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. She was 79 years old.

Jeanie and her twin sister, Janie, were born in Durant, Oklahoma, and spent their childhood growing up on military bases across the country, as well as in Puerto Rico and Germany. Jeanie attended Texas Woman's University and transferred to the University of Georgia, where she met the love of her life, Donald Reynolds. She graduated from Georgia in 1966 and married Don that May. They settled in Waynesboro in 1968. Her passion for reading and knowledge subsequently translated as a decades-long association with the Waynesboro Public Library, where she served on the Friends Board as well as a staff member and then as a volunteer in retirement. Jeanie was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #105, and a longtime member of the Lynchburg Scottish Rite Women's Club.

Jeanie's passions were gardening, reading, and British history. She spent her latter years deeply involved in genealogical research and on various memorable trips with her beloved aunt and partner in crime, Sandra McKee. The last few years she loved having her beloved dog Max by her side. Jeanie will be remembered for her love of family, her ability to always get the first and last word in (and most of the words in between), and her kind heart and warm smile.

She is survived by her daughter Shannon Reynolds of Charleston, South Carolina; granddaughter Lesley Taylor Torbett of London, United Kingdom; grandson Luke Rennels Torbett, of St. Louis, Missouri; nephews John Wright (Aliette) of Waynesboro and Jeffrey (Catherine) of Hillsborough, North Carolina, and her nephews' children. She is also survived by her aunt Sandra McKee of Las Vegas, Nevada and her cousin Tommy (Pam) of Las Vegas and their son and grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Freddie Reynolds (Deb) and their daughter and grandchildren; brother-in-law Audie Reynolds (Joy) and their children and grandchildren; sister-in-law Suzanne Clary Bryan (Jim) and their children and grandchildren; brother-in-law Dan Pickett and his son and family. She is also survived by her cousin Mary Young and her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Donald E. Reynolds, her twin sister Jane Austin Wright, as well as her parents, Johnnie and Warren Austin, and her cousin, Austin Young.

A private interment at Augusta Memorial Park Cemetery will take place at a later date, where part of her ashes will be placed with Don. To honor her love of her family's heritage, her remaining ashes will travel to Ireland and the United Kingdom to be placed amongst her ancestors. Donations may be made in her memory to the Waynesboro Public Library, 600 S. Wayne Ave., Waynesboro, VA 2298
