Jeane Carroll Custin of Summit Square, Waynesboro, Virginia died Sunday, January 11, 2026.

She was born on May 14, 1926, in Yonkers, New York to Phil Carroll and Margaret Birdsell Carroll. She was predeceased by her husband Tom; sons, Scott and Dean; sisters, Margaret Finch, Pat Buehler; brother, Phil Carroll.

Jeane graduated from Columbia High School, Maplewood, NJ, and earned a BFA from Syracuse University. She married Thomas "Tom" Custin on June 28, 1947. They moved to Baldwinsville, NY, where Jeane became involved with First United Methodist Church of Baldwinsville, Cub Scouts (den leader for all three sons), and the Baldwinsville Art Guild among many local organizations. Jeane and several other local artists painted the original Four Corners Mural on the Corner Cakery wall in the middle of Baldwinsville. She went on to paint a mural in the conference room of the second location of the Baldwinsville Library. She became well known throughout central New York for her pen-and-ink sketches of historic landmarks, buildings, churches, etc.

A few years after her husband Tom and son Dean died (1990 and 1991), she moved to Waynesboro, VA where her youngest sister, Pat, lived. Again, Jeane became involved in the local arts helping with the Wayne Theater restoration, the Shenandoah Valley Art Center (SVAC), the Waynesboro Symphony, Renewing Homes of Greater Augusta (RHGA), and others. She painted a massive mural on the wall opposite the Health Care wing at Summit Square, so the residents would have something other than a blank wall to look at.

An avid traveler, she traveled to every continent except Antarctica. Some of her favorite trips included traveling with her sons, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren to the Galapagos Islands and on a Mediterranean cruise, by boat up the Yangtze River (before it got dammed), Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, Vietnam, and Russia. She made numerous trips to Africa, Europe, and Turkey.

She is survived by her son Jay (Kim) of Collinsville, VA; five grandchildren, Cadence (Jaime) of Callaway, VA, Alex (Amanda) of Silver Spring, MD, and Bryson, Colton, and Ellie of Collinsville.
