Brigadier General Jearald Douglas Allen, 92, of Cumberland, Maryland went to live with the Lord on Tuesday, March 1 in Waynesboro, Virginia.

Born in Green Spring, West Virginia on April 26, 1929, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Allen and Odessa Pauline Allen.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert L. Allen and his sister Ruth Yvonne Athey.

Survivors are his wife of 67 years JoAnn Allen, daughter Jamie Wilson and her husband David. Jearald's grandchildren include Lara (Wilson) Barr and her husband Ezra, Sara (Wilson) Wanderlingh and her husband Alfred, Lindsey (Wilson) Bailey and her husband Michael, and Amanda Wilson. Jearald was also blessed with six great grandchildren including Sunny Barr, Easton Barr, Liam Barr, Annabelle Wanderlingh, Mathew Bailey, and Charlotte Bailey. Also surviving is Jearald's sister Jean and husband Fred Bennett of Centennial, Colorado and sister Kay and husband Frank Shambaugh of Cumberland in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

Jearald was a 1947 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He attended Catherine's Business School in Cumberland, Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA., U.S. Army Command and Staff College, Air Force War College, National Defense University and National Security Management College. Jearald was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years and retired in 1984 as postmaster.

Jearald entered the military service in 1952 where he attended OCS in Ft. Benning, GA, and graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served in Korea with the 31 ^st Infantry Regiment where he was wounded several times. He was awarded for bravery and received the Combat Infantry's Badge and two Purple Hearts. Upon return from Korea, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves, serving in various assignments of increasing responsibility in Cumberland, MD, Fort Indiantown Gap, PA, Fort Lee, VA, USAR Control Group, St. Louis, MO, and at Fort Gordan GA where he served as Deputy Commandant at the Army Signal School retiring with the rank of Colonel. His final assignment was as Commander of the Maryland Defense Force with the rank of Brigadier General in 2002. Brigadier General Allen's awards include: Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserved Forces Medal, State of Maryland Meritorious Medal, State of Maryland Commendation Medal, State of Maryland Service Medal, the MDDF Achievement Ribbon, and the MDDF Emergency Services Ribbon.

Jearald was a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons East Gate Lodge #216 AF & AM, and was a 33rd degree Mason and Past Master. He was also a member of Bonnie Blink Lodge #1, Baltimore, MD Knights Templar, Consistory, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Bodies of Cumberland and Baltimore, the Eastern Star, McKinley Chapter Lodge #12 and the Ali Ghan Shrine Club.

Jearald was a member of the Local and National Boy Scouts of America and served on the executive board received the Scouter's Key, Arrowhead Honor Award, the Silver Beaver, and order of the Arrow award. He served as the past Grand Chaplain of the United Commercial Travelers of America, where he served as secretary and treasurer. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, Reserve Officer's Association, and the Allegany Chapter where he served as secretary and treasurer. He was a member of the American Legion and a member of the Executive Board and Financial Stewardship Committee for the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association and as PTA president at Johnson Height's Elementary School and served with others to obtain a statue of George Washington, his personal hero, for his community.

Jearald attended Centre Street United Methodist Church served as the past president of the United Methodist Men and enjoyed teaching Sunday school for many years. Prior to his death he had relocated with his wife to Waynesboro, VA to live near his daughter and joined Westwood Baptist Church.

Jearald's hobbies included restoration of antique cars, reading, and home repairs. He was a mentor to all, a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and devoted to God, his country and his family

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Hope Community Church, Waynesboro, VA.  Rev. Dr. Glen Holman will be officiating. Family and friends may share memories and condolences at Mcdowfuneralhomeinc.com
