Jeremy John
Freeman
May 18, 1934 — Oct 13, 2025
Afton
Jeremy Freeman, devoted husband, father, and teacher, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 13, 2025, at his beloved country home in Afton, Virginia. He was 91 years old.
Born on May 18, 1934, in Boston, Massachusetts, to John Freeman and Elizabeth Keep Freeman. Jeremy grew up in Washington, D.C. where he attended Gonzaga High School and later Georgetown University, earning a degree in English Literature. Following college, Jeremy served in the Army National Guard Military Policeman Battalion.
For more than three decades, Jeremy was a math teacher in Virginia, inspiring students with his encouragement, patience, and love of learning. His dedication was recognized through multiple teaching awards before he retired from Charlottesville High School in 1993.
Jeremy took joy in reading, creating, and building. Perhaps his most ambitious undertaking was the wooden sailboat he built by hand, which he later sailed proudly on the Chesapeake Bay. He was also a lifelong lover of animals, especially dogs, who were constant companions throughout his life. His quiet patience seemed to draw animals—and people—naturally to him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Sheila Tuttle Freeman; his daughter Elizabeth McLean; four grandchildren: Callie, Andrew, Emily, and Michael; and his adored blue heeler, Trig. Jeremy was predeceased by his son, John Michael Freeman, his sister-in-law, Sylvia Rogers, and brother-in-law, Eric Tuttle. His family and friends will remember Jeremy for his disciplined and thoughtful nature.
A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at 12:00 noon at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Jeremy's name may be made to the Building Fund of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 301 Sheppard Court, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
