John Joseph Lacy, Jr., DDS, passed away unexpectedly on May 13, 2025. He was the firstborn of John and Jessie Lacy on April 11, 1941, in Lynchburg, VA. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carolyn Everett Lacy, his sister Betty Thompson, his three sons, John Matthew (Lara) of Seattle, Washington, Mark Andrew (Kristi) of Manakin Sabot, Virginia, and Benjamin Everett (Amanda) of Camden, Maine. He is also survived by his seven adored grandchildren, Madelyn, Jack, Milo, Liam, Patrick, Elizabeth, and James. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Carolyn, and his brothers-in-law Bill Rutherford and Chris Thompson.

Dr. Lacy was a graduate of Benedictine College Preparatory, the Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1963, and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry, Class of 1967. He did his Oral and Maxillofacial residency at the Norfolk General Hospital, where he met the love of his life, Carolyn. Following that, he completed training in General Anesthesia at the Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.  His time at Mt. Sinai began a lifelong love of the City of New York – a place he returned as often as he could.

Following his dental training, Dr. Lacy entered active service in the US Army at the 279th Station Hospital in the American sector of occupied Berlin from 1969-1972. Being in Berlin cemented Dr. Lacy's love of military history throughout the rest of his life and traveling throughout Europe during the early years of John and Carolyn's marriage was an adventure they never forgot. After his discharge from the Army, he and his family settled in Waynesboro where he practiced dental surgery for 40 years in private practice and then practiced at the Augusta Regional Dental Clinic for a number of years.

He was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and was a founding member and scoutmaster for BSA Troop 25, guiding many young men to achieve Eagle Scout including his three sons. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, one of the highest honors bestowed on scoutmasters. Throughout the years, he took great enjoyment in participating in his boys' school, sports, and community activities. He served on the Board of Directors of the United Way, the Soil and Water Conservation Board, and the Board of Directors of the Augusta Regional Dental Clinic. In his later years he spent many happy times at his lake camp at Happy Hollow.

Visitation will be held at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro on Monday, May 19, from 6-8 PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated on May 20 at 11 AM at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Waynesboro with interment at Riverview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the VMI Foundation in Lexington, Virginia, the building fund at St. John's Catholic Church, or a charity of one's choice.
