Obituary

John Cletus Leavell, 83, a longtime resident of Waynesboro, VA, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2022 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He was born September 2, 1939 in Waynesboro, a son of the late Fletcher and Edith (Pannell) Leavell.

He retired after nearly 40 years of service with Fleming Foods (formerly Blue Ridge Grocery). He returned to work for Intrapac in Harrisonburg, VA for several years, though he was currently retired.

John was very active with the Augusta County Quarterback Club, Hugh K. Cassell Elementary Little League Baseball, and Wilson Youth Basketball League. He was active in the Waynesboro Lions Club and served on the Board of Leake's Chapel Church of the Brethren. He loved to hunt, fish, and spend time watching dirt track racing. He explored genealogy and was President of the Holloway Amiss Leavell Society.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Young Leavell; 3 brothers, F.C. Leavell, Bill Leavell, and Charles "Tippy" Leavell; and sister, Ginger Degler.

Surviving are his brothers, Eddie Leavell and Bud Leavell; children, Kay Mader, Janet Robinett, Mike Leavell, Johnny Leavell and his wife Michelle, and Joe Leavell and his wife Lori Ann; grandchildren, Hannah Perry, Tasha Snodgrass, Brandon Robinett, Nikki Savaiinaea, Marcie Mader, Marian Updike, John Leavell III, Adam Black, Jacob Leavell, Tyler Leavell, Tyler Salmon, Kevin Feathers, Gage Feathers, Wyatt Feathers, Jenifer Leavell, Alana Black and Lilly Feathers; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, September 8, 2022 at McDow Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held Friday, September 9, 2022 at Leake's Chapel Church of the Brethren at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
