Mary Futrell, of Waynesboro, passed from this life to be present with the Lord on February 5, 2023 at her home and surrounded by her family.  She was born July 7, 1931 in Taylorsville, NC, the daughter of the late Carl Elder Allen and Ella Grey Gwaltney Allen.  She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.  She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Basil L. Futrell; their daughter, the Honorable Anne Marie Futrell Reed; and grandson, Graham (Jack) Chilton Reed.  She is also survived by her brother, Charles Eugene Allen and his wife, Kay Mulligan Allen of Herndon, Virginia; special nieces, Christine Allen of Syracuse, NY, Laurie Hindman of Berthoud, CO, and Amy Allen of Herndon, VA; nephew, Chuck Allen of Raleigh, NC; and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mary was an avid reader and a talented writer.  She believed strongly in the importance of education and graduated from George Washington University with a B.A. in English in 1956.  She went on to work for the F.B.I. for seventeen years where she received an award for outstanding service from J. Edgar Hoover, then Director.  She retired when her daughter was born and was a dedicated mother and homemaker.  She spent her days caring for others and was the caregiver for her father until his passing.  She was also an active member of Broadview Baptist Church in Temple Hills, MD, and helped operate their food pantry.  The light of her life was her grandson, Jack, whom she adored.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday February 25, 2023 at Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church.
