Mary Agnes (Ayres) Mallory, 95, passed away Sunday June 5, 2022 at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born February 20, 1927 to John Thomas and Naomi (Maxey) Ayres in Crewe Virginia.
As a teenager, she went to work as a telephone operator to help support her family. Her father had died at a young age and left his wife with 7 children to raise. Mary was Valedictorian of her senior class and received her nursing training at Johns Hopkins University. She became a registered nurse and worked at several different hospitals before landing in Waynesboro in November of 1974. She worked as one of the nursing supervisors at Waynesboro Community Hospital for over 30 years and earned the award of "Nurse of the Year" during her tenure there. She loved being with her husband, Reverend John Mallory, Jr. and their family.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband John Mallory, Jr.; two brothers, Merrill Ayres and William Ayres; three sisters, Annette Andrews, Dorothy Bruno and Eula Darnell; two brothers-in-law, Fred Mallory and Thomas Mallory.
Surviving are her children, Beth Stanley (Louis "Skeeter") of Hopewell, John Mallory (Julie) of Richmond, Ginny Andrews ( Don) of Waynesboro, James Mallory (Lisa) of Mechanicsville; one sister, Virginia Johnston (Rudy); sisters-in-law, Jean Ayres and Jean Mallory; grandchildren, Travis Stanley, Derek Stanley (Cameron), Jered Stanley, Katy Hall, Dani Hall, Paul (Alyssa) Mallory, Scott Mallory, Lauren (Sam) Rogers, Ryan (Fiancé Blair) Mallory; great grandchildren, Talon Stanley, Maddex Fitzwater, Riley Stanley, Grey Mallory and Caleb Rogers.
The family would like to thank the Hospice of the Shenandoah for their love and care.
A Memorial Service will be conducted 2:00 PM Wednesday June 8, 2022 at McDow Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Ely Guzman. The family will receive friends prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your favorite charity in her name.
