Mitchell P. Lawrence, Jr., a distinguished and dedicated Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) executive and later independent contract investigator, passed away on 2 November 2025 at the age of 97 in Leesburg, VA.

With a remarkable career spanning over 60 years, his legacy is one of service, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his work in the fields of security, counterintelligence, and investigations.

Born on 30 November 1927 in Clifton Forge, VA, the son of Mitch Lawrence Sr and Lyda Lawrence, MP, as he was known, spent the early part of his life honing his skills and eventually built a career that would span the highest levels of government service. He joined the US Marine Corps at 17 as World War II ended and then later graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) during the Korean War joining the US Air Force (USAF) as an officer. His CIA career began in 1955 and spanned three decades until his retirement in 1986, ultimately serving as Chief of the Counterintelligence Group and holding numerous executive leadership roles in security and personnel investigations. He was a pivotal figure in the CIA's personnel security division and played a key role in the security operations at various domestic and international facilities.

After retiring from the CIA, MP continued his exemplary security career as a contract investigator, working with prestigious organizations such as the U.S. State Department, MSM Security Services, and OMNISEC International. Throughout his career, MP was known for his sharp attention to detail, his unyielding professionalism, and his vast knowledge of security and counterintelligence protocols. At one time the companies he served trusted him with six different government agencies' credentials. His contributions were not only recognized within those companies and agencies but also by those who had the privilege of working with him: he was a gentleman.

MP's CIA work took him and his family around the world, including Florida, Southeast Asia, California, and Massachusetts. He was instrumental in securing sensitive information and safeguarding national security interests. His career was defined by a deep sense of duty and an unwavering commitment to excellence in every role he undertook. This was reflected in mentoring many throughout his career. Concurrently with his CIA career, he also remained in the USAF Reserves retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1975.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, MP was respected for his integrity, humility, and strong character. As he moved for work, he served as an elder in several churches, was active in Rotary and other civic groups, and a member of CIRA and SIGNA. He valued lasting relationships with colleagues and community members alike whose lives he touched through his work. Remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and reliable friend, his legacy of service to his country and community will be remembered by all who knew him.

Predeceased by his wife, Edie Lawrence, in 2023, he is survived by his two children, Mary Beth Hill and Mitchell P. Lawrence, III, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and those who spent any amount of time with him…and he loved the golden retrievers he owned during his years in retirement.

Services will be held at 1pm on 13 Nov at the VMI Chapel and Oak Grove Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia officiated by the Reverend Dr. Glen Holman and Military Honors by the U.S. Marine Corp.

A celebration of his life ceremony will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Rotary International or the SIGNA Scholarship Fund (signascholarship.org), college scholarships for CIA Security sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters.
