NANCY YVONNE (SMITH) BYERS
The definition of "mom" is a female parent; the definition should say "love".
Mom went to be with our Lord God Almighty on the morning of Wednesday, September 03, 2025. She passed peacefully at home with family by her side. She was a lady of many different names, Mom, Meana, Mamaw, Ms. Nancy, as well as many others. She was born on July 28, 1936, to John and Virginia Smith of Burnsville, Virginia, located in Bath County. She served our country proudly as a military wife with her late husband, Don Alan Byers, Sr. in the United States Air Force. She loved to travel, with her stay in Hawaii being her favorite and most talked about home away from home. She moved to Fishersville, Virginia in February of 1978 and she lived there for the rest of her life. She babysat for the neighborhood where she was instrumental in the lives of most of the young children who grew up here, including many of her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, Sr. (Pop); her parents, John and Virginia Smith; and sister, Janet. Surviving her are sisters, Bettie Dunnagan, Maxine Sullivan, and Sue Schafer; her children, Donna Johnson and her husband, James, Don, Jr. (Sonny) and his wife, Lisa, Darryl and his wife, Jan, and Dennis; her grandchildren, Daniel Drue and his wife, Kimberly, Isaiah Paul, Benjamin Jacob, Alan Ross and his wife, Kimberly, Amanda and Joe, Alexandra and her husband, Nolan, Davis, Bennet, Anthony, Zachary and wife, Julia; and great grandchildren, Conner, Alyssa, Austin, Benjamin, Jr., Mason, Blake, Hunter, Tucker, CJ, Tanner, Mollie, and Reed.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Ollie and Vermell, Scott and Kaitlin, as well as all of Mom's caregiver's who became her friends. A very special thank you to Theresa, Faith, and Britney for everything you did for Mom!
Mom had made prearrangements with McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro, Virginia to be cremated and requested that there be no service conducted for her. We request that there be no flowers sent but ask that in remembrance of her that we honor the elderly with our love and time.
We will miss her so much.
