Nancy Kunkle Carey, of Staunton, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 22nd, 2025, surrounded by her family at Baldwin Park. Ironically, this was across the street from where she was born on April 5th, 1929 to John Marshall and Virginia Firebaugh Kunkle. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Henry Baker Carey, her cousins, Jane and Jim Taylor, her brother-in-law, Maitland Carey and her lifelong friends, Martha Wilkerson, Milly Smiley and Joy Dabney.

After marrying, Nancy moved several times with her husband while he served in the Air Force, and then returned to Staunton. She taught second grade and Sunday School and later became the bookkeeper for her father at Worthington Hardware and then her husband at Carey International. After their first retirement, Nancy and her husband opened Turtle Lane Gifts and Antiques in downtown Staunton. When grandchildren arrived, they retired once again to spend more time with their beloved grandsons.

Nancy was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, even attending service a couple of weeks before her passing. She was a proud graduate of Mary Baldwin College and was very active with the local Alumnae group, serving on the Alumni Board and opening their home for many Baldwin events. She was very honored to receive the Emily Wirsing Kelly Leadership Award for her service to the college. Nancy was also very active in her community, because "she liked helping people." In later years, Nancy spent most of her time creating priceless memories with her wonderful grandchildren, playing bridge and watching Antiques Road Show.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Susan Carey Lendermon, her son-in-law, Chuck Lendermon, her precious grandchildren, Evan (Tiffany) and Collin (Taylor) Lendermon, and her sister-in-law, Gennivee Carey. She was also extremely close to her cousins, Matthew, John, and Jimbo Taylor and their families, all of North Carolina, local cousins and many cherished lifelong friends. She and Henry were considered "second parents" for numerous kids of all ages over the years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Home Goods Pantry at First Presbyterian Church online at 1stpres-staunton.org, by mail or in person at 100 East Frederick Street, Staunton, VA 24401.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 28th at 2:00pm at First Presbyterian Church in Staunton, Virginia officiated by Rev. Dr. Jeff Binder.
