Nancy Snyder, 89, of 54 Woods Lane, Waynesboro, VA, passed into eternal life with Jesus on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.  All four of her children had the blessing of being with her at home.

She was born February 7, 1935 in Martinsville, VA, daughter of Luther T. Barbour and Erie Hairfield Barbour. She lost her mother at age 8 and was loved and nurtured by her older sister, Una Lemons, while her older brothers, "T" and Raymond were away, defending our country in WW II.  These early years influenced her character, work ethic, strength, and thriftiness.  She graduated from high school and went on to Radford College for one year, but the post-depression and post-war times forced her to let go of her college dreams.  She went to work in Martinsville for DuPont as a secretary, and it was there that a newly transferred engineer, Dick Snyder came into her life.  The beginning of their story to hear them tell it was as magical as their life commitment to one another.  They were married on April 12, 1958 and honeymooned finishing the Federal tax forms that were due in three days.  They made Waynesboro their home except for a 4-year stint in Londonderry, Ireland, which provided many family travel opportunities, new friends, and antiquing trips. Ireland, it's people, music, history, and the birth of their fourth child, Chris,  always held a special place in her heart. They were blessed with four children Annette (Mark) Peterson of Polson, MT; Jeff (Sarah), of Manakin Sabot, VA, John Snyder of Waynesboro, VA, and Chris (Dami) Snyder of Manakin Sabot, VA.  And she loved all of her ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren very much!

Nancy was a member of First Presbyterian Church ever since moving to Waynesboro in 1958, and she loved God and her church family.  Once the children were in school, she went back to get her realtor license and found pleasure in helping others find that special house. She played golf and could boast 3 holes-in-one…. more than all three sons combined.  She also played tennis and loved to garden in her yard.  It was a particular joy for her to share various flowers and roses with people she knew and the residents of a local nursing home. Or perhaps you received some divided flower bulbs, a jar of soup on your doorstep, or a slip of paper with a prayer, poem, or quote on it. She did her best to love people well, and was clothed in compassion and kindness. She was a dedicated and nurturing mother and wife and we feel so fortunate to have been a part of her life.

The family would like to thank Dr. Nick Paphitis, Dr. Ben Farley, and the caring people of Gentiva Hospice for their compassion and care in her final week.  And thanks to the many friends who shared cards, memories, and brought gifts of food to the house.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, January 23, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church, a reception will be held after the service.
