Nanette Gabrielle Ketterer of Waynesboro, VA, passed away at her childhood home on May 24, 2025, following a lengthy battle and hard day's night with cancer. She was 70 years old.

She was born in the first Waynesboro hospital on October 22, 1954, daughter to Dr. Charles C. Ketterer and Rita France Ketterer. After spending just about all of her adult life on the west coast, her life would come full circle. The cancer diagnosis would bring her home to family in Waynesboro and her passing would take her back to the same building she was born in.

Nanette graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1972. She would go on to graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, in 1976.

Nanette was determined to make her way in the world on her terms. Months in advance from graduating from college, she secured a job at Yosemite National Park. She took her last exam at college, came home for 2 days, hopped in her Datsun and made her way across the country to sunny California! She would remain at Yosemite for well over a decade. This offered her the ability to visit other national parks in the region including the parks in beautiful Hawaii. The area was "too lovely to leave" and eventually she would return to school to get her master's degree before landing a job with an insurance company in San Mateo.

Nanette grew up in the 60s and 70s, eras of cultural change, excellent music, art, and fashion. She embraced this time of her life and all the possibilities available. She had always been a natural talent when it came to drawing and painting. She kept up with art lessons that she began at an early age and would continue through her college years into her adult life. It was her avenue of expression, and she approached it with great enthusiasm and love. She was also a fan of the music scene. An adamant Beatles fan, she had many of their albums. One Saturday she came home with the Beatles "HELP!" album and it played daily for well over a month! Good times. Good times.

Nanette was preceded in death by her father Dr. Charles C. Ketterer, brothers Brian Geoffrey Ketterer and Giles Anthony Ketterer.

Nanette is survived by her mother Rita Ketterer-Greenstone of Fishersville, VA;  siblings Stephen Patrick Wenceslas Ketterer (De) of Palmyra, VA;  Michelle Maureen Morgan (Larry) of Roanoke, VA;  Denise Raphaelle Eavers (Scott) of Stuarts Draft, VA; and Paula Danielle Blackhall (Russell) of Innerleithen Scotland; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Nanette's special friends Chuck Muenzen and Joe Volponi of California made it possible to get Nanette home so she could get the care she needed. Their friendship, kindness and support helped her to see another birthday, another Christmas, and spend more time with Mom. Thank you, Chuck and Joe, for looking out for our big sister.

We were a big family and we all had varying interests but we did have one thing in common - we all loved our natural world. Our parents instilled in each of us respect for nature and planting a tree whenever and wherever possible. For those of you who knew Nanette, please take a moment to wish her well and if funds allow, plant a tree in her memory.
