Peter Kindig Nebel

Peter Kindig Nebel, 81, passed away peacefully at home on August 15, 2026, following a battle with cancer. He was born on December 2, 1944, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the son of the late Richard and Charlene Nebel. He was the older of two brothers. 

Peter attended Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Delaware. He went on to attend Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, graduating with the Class of 1967 with a degree in biology. He later earned a master’s degree in Zoology from the University of Washington in Seattle, class of 1969. 

Throughout his career, Peter combined his love of science and the natural world with his environmental work. He joined the Peace Corps in 1976 and was stationed in El Salvador and Honduras on development aquaculture projects. For the next couple of years, he worked on environmental matters for the U.S. Army and served as an environmental consultant for private companies in Honduras and the U.S. 

In 2003, Peter began working as an environmental contractor for the U.S. Air Force at Kunsan Air Base in South Korea. He spent five years there before moving to Qatar, continuing his work in environmental matters. 

Peter was a wonderful character and a very entertaining companion. He was passionate about nature and dedicated many years to observing birds, butterflies, and plants, always devoting himself to his observations with his wife Angela. After returning to Virginia, he became a member of the Augusta Bird Club, Massanutten Chapter of the Archeology Society of Virginia, and Partners of the Americas, where he continued to pursue his interests in birds, archaeology, and culture for many years. 

Peter’s love of exploration and discovery took him to many places throughout his life. Whether through his environmental work abroad, his wildlife observations, or his interest in archaeology and history, he remained curious about the world around him and eager to learn from it. 

Peter is survived by his wife, Angela Elizabeth Nebel; his brother, David Nebel; his children, David, Virgilio, Charlene, and Zoila; his stepchildren, Juan and Sonia; and his grandchildren. 

He will be remembered by his family and friends for his love of nature, his dedication, and his persistent curiosity about the world and its history.
