Obituary

With our hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved Phyllis K. Hanna, age 96, on April 18th, 2026, surrounded by her devoted family. She was married to the love of her life, the late William B. Hanna, for 64-years, and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Randy Moulton, granddaughter Charlotte, as well as nieces including Debra Brewer and Rita Death and their families.

Phyllis' passion in life was entertaining and event planning for family and friends. She was a true artisan who had perfected the art of entertaining—no detail was too small, no design decision insignificant. She had a gift for creating a festive and stylish atmosphere where each guest felt special, finding great joy in hosting dinner parties, organizing hor d'oeuvre groups, and planning social events at the Waynesboro Country Club, never missing an opportunity to dance and enjoy life.

Phyllis had a 40-year career as a realtor with Helen Kent Realty and Coldwell Banker Barger Real Estate Agency. Using her natural affinity for staging and eye for interior design, she went above and beyond for her clients, leading to a successful career and lifelong friendships. Generous with her time and energy, Phyllis was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for nearly 60 years, served on the board of Waynesboro Country Club, and often volunteered with local charities and food banks.

Her and Bill's retirement coincided with the birth of their first and only grandchild, Charlotte. This ushered in the golden years of their lives and brought them immeasurable joy and happiness. Phyllis will be remembered for her graceful balancing of family, social, career, and philanthropic endeavors, and for setting an example for how to live a vibrant, fulfilling life. She will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.

Phyllis was born on June 28th, 1929 in East Gulf, WV, attended WVU Tech, and relocated from Lewisburg, WV, to Waynesboro, VA, in 1962. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert W. Kirby, Sr. and Marie B. Kirby, her three sisters Irene K. Brown (Ike), Bette K. Kincaid (Don), and Sarah K. Harris (Pete), and one brother, Robert W. Kirby, Jr.

Phyllis' wish was to be present at her Celebration of Life. Her 95th birthday party served as such and was a fabulous gathering of all her treasured family and friends. A private graveside service will be held for her family at a later date.

McDow Funeral Home will handle all arrangements. Remembrances and condolences may be shared on the online obituary or mailed to: McDow Funeral Home, 1701 West Main Street, Waynesboro, VA, 22980
