Ray Quillen, a native of Waynesboro, Virginia, died on February 18, 2020 at Summit Square. He was born at home on February 11, 1933, the youngest of four children to Edgar M. and Dana W. Quillen.
He graduated from Waynesboro High School where he played baseball, basketball, football and track. After a post-graduate year at Fishburne Military School, he received a football scholarship to The University of Virginia graduating with a major in Economics. He and his brother, Max Quillen, then took over Waynesboro Nurseries, the family business.
He married Ruth E. Harrison on June 26, 1954
He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro serving in many capacities. He was an active member of the Waynesboro Rotary Club and Waynesboro YMCA.
Besides his family, his main loves were gardening, his orchard in Nelson County, bird watching, GOLF and wood working. He was known as a fun loving gentleman with a sharp sense of humor even into the dark days of Parkinson's.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ruth Harrison Quillen; his daughter Linda Quillen Sandquist (Warner) of Stuarts Draft and his two sons Kirk Randolph Quillen (Barbara) of Lyndhurst, and Timothy Ray Quillen (Theresa) of Crozet. Grandchildren are Sara Quillen of Torrance, CA; Katie Santana (Peter) of Indonesia; Matthew Quillen of Charlottesville and Andrew Quillen at George Mason University. Great grandchildren are Carter, Micah, and Luke Santana currently in Indonesia with their parents. Also surviving are his sister, Betty Quillen Phillips, of Richmond and many nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held at graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will be appreciated by First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, the Waynesboro YMCA or the Waynesboro Rotary Club.
