Roger Miller Davis, 96, a resident of Staunton, VA, passed in his sleep at his home on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 9:40 PM.

A son of the late Jasper William Davis, Sr. and Alpha Eavey Davis, he was born September 6, 1925.

On January 14, 1949, he married Leona Thomas Moomau who preceded him in death on July 31, 2001. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Louise Wilberger, Isabell Fitzgerald, Jasper Davis Jr.

Surviving are his children, Dale (Linda) Davis, Gail (Jimmy) Breeden, and Lisa (Shawn) Ott; grandchildren, Carrie (TJ) Rodgers, Clayton Breeden and Shawnie Myers, Codie (Byron) Phillips, Steven (Liz) Click, Eric (Nadine) Davis, Jeremy Breeden, and Laura (Tom) Spears; great-grandchildren, Abby, Tessa and Jake Rodgers, Chloe and Savannah Phillips, and Mike Davis; siblings, Ruby Kessler, Helen Swisher, and Peggy (Bobby) Bocock; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Carol Davis, Betty Moomau, and Gladys Houser; special caregivers Margaret, Natasha, Debby, Tina, Caribe and Lorri; and Lovable, Adorable, Fur Baby Feline "Rita".

He was drafted into the US Army Co. "E" 162nd Infantry at the age of 19 on Feb. 1, 1945 to the Roanoke, VA reception center, and was deployed as a truck driver into the Pacific Theater. His decorations and citations included the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal; Philippine Liberation Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Meritorious Unit Award GO 17 25 Nov 1945, and Lapel Button Issued ASR Score (8) 2 Sept 1945. He was honorably discharged on June 28, 1946 at the separation center in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Roger worked at Westinghouse in Verona, VA (later bought by McCray) for 30 + years.

He was the hardest working man one could know. If he wasn't farming, baling hay, digging post holes, putting up or mending fences, chasing cows, sawing and splitting wood, or working in his massive garden, he was teaching his grandkids the farming life. He also worked some with his son-in-law building barns. He was active in helping on the farm up to about 6 years ago.

Roger loved the outdoors and over the last few years, gave his caregivers a run for their money about being outside. He didn't care that it was 90+ degrees. He also had a love for playing horseshoes, fishing and hunting.

As he aged, he loved napping or just hanging out on his back porch where he spent most of his time during the day, if he wasn't outside. He enjoyed watching the cows and the outdoor cats or whatever was going on outside. He really enjoyed watching the outdoor cats running up and down the sidewalk and into the shed.

He loved watching Western movies and Andy Griffith in the evenings. He would listen or rather "tolerate " boogie woogie music that Margaret would play to him. LOL! His last few months of his life, he had war and farming books that he really enjoyed looking at. He loved flowers and bright colors, but his favorite colors were blue and red.

The caregivers used to push him in his wheelchair out to the shop, down to the barn, and up and down the sidewalk. They, along with grandsons and Tony Matteson, will carry his body to his final resting place. Honorary pallbearers will be nieces and nephews.

A graveside service is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 3:00 PM in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, officiated by Chaplain Matthew At Lee. Those wishing to join in the processional to the cemetery should meet at McDow Funeral Home at 2:30 PM.
