Sara Sanders
Howlett
Feb 25, 1946 — Oct 14, 2024
Waynesboro
Sara Sanders Howlett died at home on October 14, 2024.
She was born in Newberry, Florida and graduated from the University of Florida. Working as a nurse at the University Hospital, she met her husband, who was interning as a physician. They moved to Waynesboro in 1975 to raise their children and serve their new community.
After primarily focusing on family and volunteer activities, she became a preschool teacher at the First Baptist Church for several years. She then went back to school earning a Masters in Counseling degree from Eastern Mennonite University and established a private practice in Waynesboro.
She had a special love for all children, the arts, and church. Recognized for her work and leadership in establishing the Wayne Theatre and for her support of local music, art, and recreational initiatives, she received the Waynesboro Rotary Club's Jean Harris award in May, 2012. As a member of First Baptist Church, she organized and led the greeters and ushers for decades, connecting new members to church and community activities. Her cheerful and welcoming presence was a constant along with her joy and smile.
Sara had a strong belief in protecting the environment and personally cared for birds, butterflies, and plants. She was an active member of Rose Cliff Garden Club and arranged many programs and activities. She started and led Grief Support Groups, Recovery Groups, and horticultural therapy groups at church, the hospital, and nursing homes. Her energy and varied interests were remarkable.
She became ill within the last two years and since that time has been missed by the many friends who loved her
