Obituary

Steven Alexander Yancey, 71, a resident of Waynesboro, passed away on Tuesday, November 24th surrounded by his family.

A son of the late Preston L. Yancey and Maxine (Curd) Yancey, he was born January 20, 1949 in Waynesboro, VA.

Steve was a 1967 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School and a 1974 graduate of Virginia Tech. He served in the United States Navy from 1972-1975. Steve was a science teacher at Riverheads High School before beginning his lifelong career as a salesman. He enjoyed following VA Tech football (Go HOKIES) and the New York Yankees baseball team. He dedicated a great deal of his life to Westminster Presbyterian Church and served in various leadership and mentorship roles there. The Summerlee Mission Trip was always very near and dear to his heart. He served, side by side, with many people from our community for more than 30 years. Those involved with the mission trip often refer to him as head of the "paint crew." Steve served as a volunteer firefighter for the Preston L. Yancey Fire Department for a number of years when it was first organized. New Hope Grocery was his favorite spot to enjoy early morning coffee and fellowship with good friends and members of the community.

In addition to his father, Preston L. Yancey, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas C. Yancey as well as his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Steve married Joyce P. Yancey on June 22 1974. They have been happily married for 46 years. Together, they created a beautiful family and a lasting legacy of faith and commitment.

Steve is survived by his mother, Maxine C. Yancey of Fishersville, his wife, Joyce P. Yancey of Waynesboro, his 3 children, Katherine Y. Dameron (Jason) of Waynesboro, Lindsey Y. Coyner (Travis) of Greenville, R. Spencer Yancey (Megan) of Waynesboro, 7 precious grandchildren (with one more on the way); Addyson, Kylie Grace, Kohen, Tripp, Leighton, Elin, and Huxton, his sister Sandy Y. Paxton (Rodney) of Staunton, his sister in law Linda A. Yancey of Waynesboro, his brother Preston L. Yancey of Staunton, his brother in law J. Keith Phillips (Lee) of Fishersville, his brother in law Bill E. Phillips of Waynesboro, as well as many special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close family friends.

A private graveside service will be held for the family in Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. April Cranford and the Rev. Patrick Ryan.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for all family and friends at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Westminster Presbyterian Church Outdoor Pavilion Fund at Give Now (onrealm.org)

Steve's family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jim Boyer and the Oncology Team at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. The care and compassion received while under their wings was irreplaceable!
