Thomas Wayne
Hoy
Sep 20, 1945 — Mar 6, 2023
Waynesboro
Thomas Wayne Hoy, 77 passed away peacefully Monday, March 6, 2023 at Augusta Health Hospital.
Tommy was born September 20, 1945 to the late Otho T. and Ruth (Sampson) Hoy.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Winston Hoy and Bobby Hoy (and his wife Natalie); brother in law, Tuffy Matheny.
Tommy was a very well respected member of the community and never met a stranger. He always had a smile on his face and if you were meeting him for the first time you would never believe that he was a five time cancer survivor.
He started his law enforcement career at the age of 22 in November 1967 with the Waynesboro Police Department as a patrolman and later became a K-9 handler and detective. After retiring in 1995 he returned to service in 2005 as a part-time court security employee for the Waynesboro Sheriff's Office where he remained employed until his passing. He proudly served the citizens of Waynesboro for over 46 years.
Tommy enjoyed going to bluegrass festivals, especially the Galax Fiddler's Convention, watching his son and grandson race, hunting, auctioneering, throwing darts and playing bingo and cards with his friends….but more than anything he loved his children and grandchildren and would always tell anyone who was willing to listen how proud he was of them.
He is survived by sister, Louise Matheny; children, Tommy Hoy, Christina Wilson (husband Randy) and Tammy Humphreys (husband Frank); grandchildren, Tyler Hoy, Brandon Hoy, Ashley Wilson, Cheyenne Staples, Ricky Wilson, David Foster, Shawn Foster and Kelsee Hoy; six great grandchildren and eleven very special nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 13, 2023 at McDow Funeral Home.
The Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at McDow Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Pastor Mike Wells. The Waynesboro Police department and Waynesboro Sheriff's office Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers and last call service at Augusta Memorial Park cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, in honor of Tommy's special friend, Raygan Skye Batton the family asks that donations be made to The MaDee Project which provides support to pediatric cancer patients in Waynesboro, Staunton and the Augusta County region.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Waynesboro Moose Lodge after the service for a meal.
