On January 31, 1937 William Harrison (Bill) Shuler was born to the late Edwin J. and Gladda Blose Shuler.  Bill passed away on May 24, 2023 at the Shenandoah Hospice house.

Bill was predeceased by a daughter, Gayle S. Gilman, his parents, and a sister Nancy S. Keyser.  Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Belle; his son, Edwin (Karen)of Stuarts Draft; Son-in-law, Dennis Gilman of Montpelier, and Grandchildren Christopher Gilman of Henrico, Ryan (Melissa)Shuler of Ashland; Granddaughter, Jaime (Andrew) Lucchetti of Mechanicsville; and 5 great grandchildren, Hannah, Isla, and Liviana Lucchetti; and Luke and Grayson Shuler.   He is also survived by a brother E. Jack (Priscilla) Shuler of Bowling Green, VA and a number of nieces and nephews.

Bill grew up and attended school in the town of Stanley, Virginia.  After graduating from high school Bill moved to Richmond where he was employed by Virginia Trust Co.  He worked there while attending a number of banking courses.  After much hesitancy in leaving Richmond Bill decided to move to Waynesboro where he was employed with the local DuPont Plant.

Bill spent 35 years with the DuPont plant taking advantage of their employee training program and becoming a machinist.  He very much enjoyed his years with DuPont but took an early retirement plan that the company was offering in 1991.  Bill was a very energetic person and could not be idle for any period of time.  With this he decided that he needed to find another career.  A friend encouraged him to become a tour bus driver.  After much hesitation he decided to give it a try.  Since he was a lover of people and travelling this met his criteria for a second career.  He enjoyed driving a tour bus for at least 15 years, until his health no longer allowed him to continue.

Very soon after moving to Waynesboro Bill and his family joined the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro where he was an active member until his health began to slow him down.  He was a member of the church for at least 65 years holding numerous jobs within the church, which included being a deacon.

For those that knew Bill well, will attest to the fact the he fought a long and hard fight to beat colon cancer but to no avail.  He loved his family and friends very much and did not want to give up.  Those words were not in Bill's vocabulary – "Give Up".

A special Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Bill will be held at First Baptist Church, Waynesboro Wednesday, May 31 at 1 pm.

Burial will be held at Augusta Memorial Park at 11 am on Wednesday.
