Carolyn "Frankie" Brown Kirtland, 69, of Norfolk, VA, formally of Waynesboro, VA went to the Lord on January 6, 2019 at Norfolk Heart Hospital.

The daughter of the late George D. and Marion Fields Brown."Frankie", as she was lovingly known, was born on December 15, 1949 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA. Frankie was a 1968 graduate of Waynesboro High School and was a 1972 graduate from Longwood College in Virginia. During college, she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and President of the student body in her senior year. After college, she was a nationwide representative of her sorority and later went on to become a high school English teacher. Since Frankie was such a pleasant and friendly person; it once earned her the title of Miss Congeniality in the Augusta County Beauty contest, a local component of the Miss America beauty pageant.

She is survived by her children: Brandon Kirtland of Akron, OH and Morgan Kirtland Kemper (husband, Jason) of Lakewood, CO. Frankie had three siblings: Donald Brown (wife, Jacqueline) of Glendale, AZ, Edward "Dale" Brown (fiancé, Diana) of Falls Church, VA and Vivian Brown of Chesapeake, VA.

Frankie had a special loving relationship with her supportive aunts and uncles: the late Gwendolyn "Gwen" Black of Waynesboro, VA (late husband, Raymond), LaVerne Napier of Waynesboro, VA (late husband Lloyd), James Fields of Earlysville, VA (late wife, Ann), Sylvia Witt of Waynesboro, VA (late husband, John), and Carolyn Mattox of Piney River, VA (husband, Carlton). Frankie had two nephews and a niece: John Brown (wife, Penny) of Saulsbury, TN, Christina Brown Deethardt (husband, Daniel) of Peoria, AZ and Collin Brown of Falls Church, VA.

Funeral Services will be conducted on January 14, 2019 at 1 P.M. at McDow Funeral home, 1701 W. Main Street, Waynesboro, VA. Viewing night will be held Sunday night, January 13, 2019 from 4 to 6 P.M. at McDow Funeral Home. Burial services will be at Beech Grove Christian Church cemetery on Cub Creek Road in Beech Grove (Roseland), VA immediately following the funeral services.

Our dear Frankie loved God as her Lord and Savior. She also was an animal lover and they were a magnet to her.
