Obituary

Elizabeth S. Cooper, a longtime resident of Waynesboro and Summit Square, died Monday, February 25, 2019 at the age of 102.

She was born April 4, 1916 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Laurette and Horace Stubbs.  She graduated from Brooklyn Friends High School and Swarthmore College, where she met her husband, Benjamin Cooper.  Their three children, Benjamin S., Richard, and Nancy (Brannon) were born in Schenectady, New York, where Ben worked for the General Electric Company.

In 1955 the family moved to Waynesboro with General Electric and remained residents since that time.  Elizabeth listed her occupations as housewife, volunteer (Red Cross Blood Bank, Free Clinic, Tourist Center, and Waynesboro Hospital), and Girl Scout Leader.  She was a championship flight golfer and an officer in the Virginia Womens Amateur Golf Association.  She shot her age at 86.

Her husband passed away in 2000, and in 2005 she moved to Summit Square.  Elizabeth read the News Virginian and the New York Times every day and was fully up to date on sports and current events, including especially the Virginia Cavaliers, the New York Yankees, and the PGA.

She was the last of four extraordinary sisters, Louise, Edith, and Jean, all of whom lived at least into their 90's.  In addition to her three children, she is survived by nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A private ceremony of remembrance will be held at a later date.
